Mining disaster residue, glycerin,

glass and wood frame

20 x 30 x 5cm

The work consists of kinetic objects controlled by automation. The recipients are embedded by wood frames and are made of two parallel clear glass sheets, containing very thin portions of the contaminated soil collected from the largest environmental disaster of Brazilian history. In November 2015 an iron ore tailings dam suffered a catastrophic failure, leaking 60 million cubic meters of iron waste mud into nature, destroying 700 Km of river waters.

The work alludes to the behavior of the mud at the moment it reached the river waters, creating a curtain that descends until the bed, blocking the light and altering the river forever. The work is inspired by a piece of traditional handcraft, usually sold as a souvenir at touristic regions of the Brazilian coast.
